Narwhal, the unicorn of the sea

The narwhal, scientific name Monodon monoceros, is a very curious cetacean species, because males have a horn like unicorns of mythology . They live in the Arctic and the North Atlantic Ocean. They feed on crustaceans and fish.

Horn of males is the left tusk of his upper jaw and can grow up to 2m long and weigh up to 10 kg. A one in 500 males also grow them right tusk, leading to a characteristic double horn. Have a role in mating rituals and hierarchy. Like almost any animal, they are threatened by hunting and human action.
